If you enjoyed Whitney Houston, Angela Bassett, Loretta Devine, and Lela Rochon together on the big screen for the 1995 hit Waiting to Exhale, then you’re in luck, because a movie sequel is on the way!

Last year Terry McMillian, author of the 1992 novel Waiting to Exhale, published a sequel to the book called Getting to Happy. Happy follows the foursome of Savannah, Robin, Gloria, and Bernadine fifteen years after we last saw them in Waiting to Exhale.

Last year, 20th Century Fox bought the movie rights to Happy and this morning McMillian tweeted that the screenplay is almost finished and the film should be in theaters near you sometime next year. (If it’s tweeted, that means it’s official right?)

It’s not known yet who will star in the sequel – whether it will be the original foursome or some new actresses to fill their shoes – but either way, we’re glad to see that this project is in the making.

Hear what Terry McMillian had to say about writing black women, a sequel to How Stella Got Her Groove Back, and the label “women’s literature.”

  1. I don’t wonna see a sequel! These chicks are old. I do not wonna see them trynna look all cute. It wouldn’t means nothing! This is not what we want. All I see in these black movies coming up are relationships of couples, man + woman, lets kiss, sleep together, cheat on each other, cry, go to church, eat together and oh… that’s it! That’s it?

  2. I don’t know about you guys but I loved waiting to exhale. It’s a great movie! I think it’s probably better coming out with a sequel to this movie than a lot of sequels I have seen out there. If ‘Scream’ and ‘Chucky’ can have sequels, then my ‘Waiting to Exhale’ can have one too. It will do well. We are all gonna see it in the theaters.

    • I agree, let’s get on this sequels bandwagon. I’d add Sex and the City your list. If they can all have successful sequels, Waiting to Exhale should definitely give it a shot.
