It’s a rarity to see virtually no drama on a reality tv show. Especially one that airs on BET. The first season of Laurieann Gibson: Born to Dance was as close to drama-free as BET will probably ever come, so if you haven’t watched the season, now may be a good time to experience this historic moment in black television history!

Today’s season finale ended with a last supper with the celebrity choreographer Laurieann Gibson and her three finalists – Kristina (KC), Hennessy, and LaTonya – before they performed to Poker Face at Lady Gaga’s Monster Ball. And then the winner was announced…

Who won Born to Dance?

LaTonya Swann won the first Born to Dance title and the 50,000 dollar prize!

Congratulations to all the participants and to Laurieann for such an inspirational reality show!

If you’re missing Born to Dance already, check out a dance video from Latonya Swann.

  1. I luv this show! Laurieann is my shero! I’m trying out next season if there is one so watch out for Nique **Chi-town in the house**

  2. i am soooooooooo happy for latonya she tears it up and was so dedicated with a great personality she will be easy to get along with an make it big in the industry.

  3. Latonya was hands down the most transformed of all the contestants and deserved to win!! Her dancing greatly improved, but it was fab to begin with. What was really exciting to see every week – was- watching her, little by little – come out of her shell…..speaking louder & with confidence, dancing with greater soul & expression, etc., then seeing all that growth, development & confidence come out in an explosion of joy & sheer goodness and trancendent happiness tonight on the show with Lady Gaga. The last few weeks have been very emotional. This has truly been THE best show of this type EVER!! No added drama has been awesome. Just think of all the things they could have dreamed up editing together with 20 women in 1 house!

    • So true! They gave the producers no drama-material to work with… I also enjoyed watching LaTonya’s journey, especially the episode when they were training hard for the Gaga audition. You could tell they all wanted it more than anything.

  4. Yes, really! I love the editing. For once, a black show without the drama – it’s awesome. And it’s probably because these girls were competing for something that was real, something more tangible and practical as in being ambitious about helping themselves and perhaps understanding that they needed good people around them in order to get better.

I am glad a show like this can move away from the ‘basketball wives’ and ‘real housewives’ syndrome. For once, BET have shown that tv can be constructive, if they choose to. Kudos to Laurieann though, I believe in this woman!

  5. OMLord!!! I am soooo HAPPY for Latonya!!! She truly deserves this title. She, along with all the other ladies, worked very hard to prove that this is what they were born to do. I, too, am so glad that there was no drama forreal in this show, especially after Khalea left. CONGRATS to all the ladies and I pray that your gift continues to take you far beyond your wildest dreams! ~ Peace & Blessings!!!

  6. It was refreshing to see a positive, God driven reality show. Hopefully BET will make the right decision and give you many more seasons. Our children need to be exposed to the arts and positive role models. Congrats to all!

  7. i live in Trinidad, and we Tinis know a good thing when we see it> so from the get go i knew she was a contender. i loved, believed, and understood where she was at and where she despartely wanted to be…. that drive to Win and the eye of T I G E R as Mrs Boomkak would say: it was in her.
