Oscar-winning actress has been romantically linked to Somali rapper based in Canada, Knaan. A US edition of Vogue, has Lupita on the cover linking her to Knaan as well. Announcing the news of being the cover girl, Lupita says: “This Summer, I am totally COVERED!”

But who is Knaan?

The Kenyan actress was spotted arriving at this year’s Glamour’s Women of the Year awards dinner at Harlow in New York City with her “rumoured” beau. Lupita was honoured with the Glamour Women of the Year award saying, “To be woman is to be human. And to be human is to seek perfection and to find joy in never obtaining it.”

The couple walked into the star-studded venue together. It has been reported that the two are “really serious” and that there is talk of a traditional Somalian “marriage” instead of a Kenyan one!

That has not sat so well with her Kenyan fans.

After winning the Oscar for Best Supporting Actress for 12 Years a Slave, Lupita may add one more monumental man to her life: a husband. The actress, 31, and her boyfriend of six months, Knaan, 36, want to get hitched quickly.

However, Lupita’s fans think the union can not be the perfect match.

One Kenyan commenter wrote, “I agree with you, but her boyfriend needs to go with that ready made family. She’s beautiful, young, intelligent and vibrant, but dating a man with two kids and she’s childless is just a waste of her time. She needs to find a “childless” man she doesn’t have to share play dates with.”

Another Kenyan fan retorted, “her actions imply that we Kenyan men are not marching enough… and that is very rude.”

Another fan said, “You sound ridiculous. Knaan is a brilliant musician, poet and social activist whose intellect is evident to anyone who has heard him speak.”

There are many reports that Lupita would hesitate to trivialize the idea of internecine strife. Her current beau has a preternatural serenity of his own that belies a childhood of unimaginable ferocity in Somalia.

Beside this, the Kenyan actress who wowed Hollywood with her style and finesse in Steve McQueen’s 12 Years a Slave, spoke about her new movie projects and her experience as an upcoming actress in Kenya.

Of her Oscar speech, Lupita said: “People are still filling me in on what happened after. My mother says I cried during the speech; I don’t believe her.”

She continued: “When I look down at this golden statue,” she said, “may it remind me and every little child that no matter where you’re from, your dreams are valid.”

She recently signed on to both co-produce in partnership with Brad Pitt’s Plan B and two other partners, and star in an adaptation of Nigerian writer Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie’s acclaimed novel about the African immigrant experience, Americanah.

“The book blew me away,” she told Vogue. “This was a project I wanted to work on, and I pursued it with all my being. It’s an unabashedly romantic book, really inspiring and uplifting. I found myself in her pages.”

  1. Thank you for this article. I am a big fan of Lupita and I hope to see her career progress with each movie project and advertising deal. The world is full of ignorant actors, so I am glad that Lupita can break this mold and bring some good sense and intelligent interviews to brighten up an otherwise unexciting acting scene.

  2. Dearest Lupita,

I am single and looking. I am a Kenyan up and coming artist. I use social activist themes in my work. I have no kids. I am 32. We would be perfect for each other. Your mother and father would be proud of my Kenyan heritage. The rest of what I want to tell you would not be fit to print here. Please contact the editors at Volta Times to contact me.

    With love,

    Your future husband Boku
