Boris Kodjoe In Confidant

A high school football sensation with a gambling habit, Nigel Patterson (Boris Kodjoe) finds himself in a bind when he gets into a violent altercation following a poker game. Seeing his future million dollar NFL contract in jeopardy, Nigel convinces his friend Jackson (rapper David Banner) to forgo his own college plans and take the fall.

Eleven years later, Jackson is back from prison and wanting retribution for his time spent covering for Nigel behind bars. Nigel, injured and broke (like many a former pro-footballer), has been far too involved in his own life to give Jackson’s sacrifice any serious thought.

Nigel never once visited Jackson in prison and stashed not one penny away for Jackson’s security blanket upon his return. In spite of Nigel’s poor planning, Jackson is determined to hold Nigel up to his promise of ‘what’s mine is yours’ – that includes milking what little wealth Nigel has left and having designs on Nigel’s wife Eden (Kenya Moore). Obviously wives shouldn’t be shared, even between the closest of friends, but Jackson’s revenge seems to be guided by one mantra: betrayal hath no boundaries.

The plot turns on a dime with unpredictably and sometimes unbelievability. The story unfolds as Jackson exacts revenge on Nigel, ranging from a bloodbath to an attempt at a drunken threesome. Writer/director Alton Glass blends suspense with elements of the surreal, a combination rarely seen in black films.

Confidant is produced under actress (and former Miss USA) Kenya Moore’s Moore Vision Media. Yet, despite a strong female influence behind the scenes, Confidant shows surprisingly little vision for its female characters beyond familiar roles as wife and seductress.

The thriller is overall engaging, if not enlightening, touching on topics like prison and athletics that resonate with the black community. Though without any sophisticated discussion of these themes, Confidant can only hope to be entertaining today and forgotten tomorrow.

  1. I saw Kenya Moore on Real Housewife’s yesterday and I must say it was interesting – put off- I thought the pageant had more than drama. But again I applaud her vision here. Bravo Kenya!

  2. Why is that almost all these Black films’ covers these days have images of black women asses and buttocks? Is this really the best way to bringing attention to a movie. Then we wonder when people say we are hyper sexualized?????

    • Heey Lashawn! What has hypersexualized gotta do with anything? I understand your frustration but I will remind you that not all black films do this! Right? So nobady should even think of hypersexualizing entire black communities because of a few movies.

  3. @Lashawn have you not seen, any white Erotic films( thrillers) movie from the 90’s. they have far more nudity, than any black movie thriller movie that do the same.
