12 people are reported dead and 59 injured after a gunman – dressed in a gas mask and police riot gear and armed with a rifle, handguns, and a smoke bomb – opened fire in a midnight showing of Dark Knight Rises.
The shooter, 24-year-old James Holmes, was apprehended by the police in the parking lot of the theater in Aurora, Colorado.
The suburban movie theater at the Aurora Town Center was quickly evacuated following the incident.
Ironically, the trailer for an upcoming Warner Brothers movie Gangster Squad, that was shown during the previews of Dark Knight Rises, contains a scene where a gunman shoots up a movie theater from behind the big screen.
President Obama had this to say concerning the event:
Michelle and I are shocked and saddened by the horrific and tragic shooting in Colorado. Federal and local law enforcement are still responding, and my administration will do everything that we can to support the people of Aurora in this extraordinarily difficult time. We are committed to bringing whoever was responsible to justice, ensuring the safety of our people, and caring for those who have been wounded.
