Revenge of the Bridesmaids (2010) is a light-hearted romantic comedy about two women (Raven-Symoné, Joanna Garcia-Swisher) who return from New York City to their home town only to find that their old childhood “friend” is marrying their friend’s ex-boyfriend. Ouch. So they plot revenge against the traitor (Virginia Williams) in order to set wrongdoings right.
An ABC family original movie, Bridesmaids manages to keep the interest of both the adult and the child, sibling, niece, nephew, or cousin who is the reason why said adult is watching the movie. It’s no Shrek, so adults won’t be thoroughly entertained, but the witty humor and surprising twists make it feel less like a sappy teenage rom-com.
The main story plot and the B-story, a budding romance involving Parker (Garcia-Swisher), are engaging enough to keep watching, perhaps benefiting from the forced turning points built into a medium structured around commercial breaks. So that long stretch of nothing happening in a film becomes a cliffhanger expected to keep you from changing the channel.
Though it does get a little cheesy. The girls frolic through secret hiding stairways and reminisce about tea parties. There are some clichés, like the bride from hell, who in this case makes her bridesmaids stay in residence, wake up early, and follow a daily schedule printed on a bridesmaids’ newsletter for an entire week before the wedding.
But thankfully, the women talk to each other about more than just guys — discussing friendship, careers, and life — so it passes the Bechdel Test for well-rounded female characters.
I’m also glad to see Raven-Symoné (College Road Trip, That’s So Raven, The Cheetah Girls, Doctor Dolittle) getting acting jobs, since besides Keke Palmer and Willow Smith, if you throw in music, there are few role models for young black girls on television.
So overall, not bad for an adolescent family chick flick.

Sounds good! I wouldn’t have thought it had more than just silly drama. But it looks like I should see this one.
Ha? An ABC movie that adults can see? This is surprising. Lol. Maybe I should see it.
You right about good role models for black kids. Raven-Symoné’s acting is pretty good. I wonder why she doesn’t get more roles than this. Keke Palmer is ok but Willow Smith? Are you talking about ‘Whip ma Herrr’?
Yeah she hasn’t done anything yet but I’m sure she’ll be acting soon enough.
Very nice rom com. I didn’t know it was at times cheesy but overall, the feel was decent. Worth the watch and nice to see Raven-Symoné.
