Aronofsky’s (Black Swan, Requiem for a Dream) work so far suggests that, if let loose with some material rich with fantasy, sci-fi or supernatural overtones, he could produce something genre fans could really chew on.
Variety claims that he is set to direct the pilot episode of an HBO drama entitled Hobgoblin. He is also set to executive produce it with Chabon, Waldman, John Lesher and Adam Kassan. The series, which features Nazi-busting con men and magicians during WWII has been described as “Inglorious Basterds with magicians.”
The TV show revolves around a group of con men and magicians who use their skills of deception to help defeat Hitler and the Germans during WWII.
It gets better. Hogboblin is being developed by the famed author Michael Chabon and his wife. The script itself, at least for the pilot, is also being penned by Michael Chabon (Kavalier & Clay, Spider-Man 2 screen story) himself and his wife, author Ayelet Waldman.
Darren Aronofsky is awesome! He is one of my favorite directors. Can he get better? This could have been one of his terrific movies, instead it’s a TV show. But with HBO, is there really any difference? When he left the directorial chair for The Wolverine, I was a little disappointed. I thought he would make a very good Wolverine film and I really wanted to see what he would do with some pulpy genre material. But I feel uplifted again!
I’m a big Aronofsky fan. He should win a best director some day in the near future. And I look forward to watching this pilot, sounds right up his alley.
