Earlier this week, it was announced that Will Smith and Jaden Smith would team up on the big screen for a futuristic sci-fi flick. Exciting, right? That’s what everyone thought.

Until they heard that M. Night Shyamalan would be directing.

Shyamalan previously directed worldwide box office hits such as The Sixth Sense (1999) — grossing over $650 million, Unbreakable (2000) about $250 million, Signs (2002) — over $400 million, and most recently The Last Airbender (2010) — which grossed over $300 million.

However, his critics speak louder than his overwhelming commercial success. A few of his critics even started a website to collect 150,000 USD to send M. Night Shyamalan back to film school before production begins on his upcoming movie.

The website reads:

Certainly, there must be 150,000 of us film lovers out there who are tired of his schlocky plot twists, canned dialogue, and over commercialized image as an auteur.

Is this real talk or real hating?

So far, they’ve collected just upwards of 220 USD. If the team manages to collect the entire $150,000 and Shyamalan turns down their offer (which inevitably he will), they plan on holding a festival in New York for aspiring filmmakers hoping to attend New York University’s (NYU) Tisch School of the Arts.

The winner of the festival will get the prize money for film school at NYU. So in the end I guess it’s for a good cause.

But is this stunt going too far?

  2. Definitely real talk! His only GREAT film was Sixth Sense IMO. Some of the others were decent but he gotta step his game up.
