Director Bill Duke (Not Easily Broken, A Rage in Harlem, Sister Act 2) will premiere his new documentary Dark Girls this October at the International Black Film Festival in Nashville, Tennessee.
Through a series of interviews and narratives, the documentary explores the issue of skin color in the black community, in particular attitudes, observations, and insecurities of dark skinned women — with comments ranging from “you stayed in the oven too long” to “she’s pretty for a dark skinned girl.”
The topic of skin color, like the long-short-natural-permed-hair-don’t-care discussions, always seems to generate a lot of attention from black viewers. Though it sometimes seems we’re just rehashing the same issues repeatedly without the really going anywhere.
Fortunately, this preview clip looks promising, so I’ll keep my fingers crossed…
