Though Elba has not landed a supreme role yet that will etch his mark in film, he still enjoys a strong following in the film/TV fan community since his breakout role as Russell “Stringer” Bell on HBO’s The Wire some nine years ago.

Having one of the biggest meetings of my professional life today…meeting a very controversial director for a very controversial part.

Says Idris Elba in a tweet that generated an uproar earlier this week. But most of us are scratching our heads and begging for answers to the familiar question: Is it Guillermo Del Toro‘s 2013, Mech vs. Aliens film Pacific Rim, or is it Quentin Tarantino’s Django Unchained?

This is coming off the back of Idris’ strong impression this year with his return as Heimdall in Thor. He also has Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance and Ridley Scott’s Prometheus on the horizon. Still, word is that Charlie Hunnam already has the lead role of Del Toro’s film locked up.

Pacific Rim is about an alien race attacking the Earth on either side of the Pacific Ocean and how humans create huge, advanced robots to battle them. Hunnam is a former mech pilot who is forced to climb back into the giant robot because of the impending doom.

This film sounds like ‘the-one’ in epic proportions. While there’s no word on what exactly Elba’s role would be, would it be a more substantial role than in Thor? Perhaps, would it be just what Idris Elba needs to etch his ‘Stringer Bell’ reputation on film?

  1. I loved Idris as Stringer Bell and since I’ve found his roles to be just ok. He was good on Daddy’s Little Girls but not sure what he would be like in Django or Pacific Rim. But if his shirt is off… I’ll be there.

  2. Idris Elba needs to land a big role. I know he’s been looking for that. He’s a good ‘bad’ guy, but he doesn’t want to accept that.
He wants to play the nice guy, and am sorry but Idris is not the good guy type, that why these gals are already fighting over him here.
Revisit the ‘Stringer Bell’ character = ‘take the shirt off’ and sleep with other people’s wives and galfriends, yeah… that’s what we like!
