Tyler Perry’s latest movie Good Deeds tells the story of Wesley Deeds (Tyler Perry), a successful and wealthy businessman who is suddenly jolted out of his routine of predictability when he meets Lindsey (Thandie Newton), a down-on-her-luck single mother. This chance encounter with a woman who is outside of his social circle ignites a spark in Wesley and could change the course of his life. As he develops complicated feelings for her right before his wedding, he considers changing the life he has always expected for the life that he has always wanted.

This year marks a change of pace for Tyler Perry, as he incorporates actors who he hopes would appeal to broader audiences.

For Good Deeds there’s Rebecca Romijn (X-Men, Eastwick, Ugly Betty) Jamie Kennedy (Ghost Whisperer), and Eddie Cibrian (CSI Miami, Third Watch) who also appeared in Perry’s Not Easily Broken. And for Perry’s upcoming The Marriage Counselor there’s the highly controversial casting of Kim Kardashian.

The message is clear – expand the reach of TP films to white audiences.

Kind of what movies like New Year’s Eve and Valentine’s Day attempt when they insert stars like Halle Berry, Queen Latifah, Jamie Foxx, and Common in an otherwise vanilla cast.

Not a bad strategy for Perry to attempt. But will it work?

Will he get more theaters and more profits or will his movies fail to reach beyond appeal his target audience?
