BANJUL, Gambia — Like most societies, the Gambia has strong traditions, which are often interpreted from the point of view of either Islam or culture or both, depending on the interests of the interpreter. The commentators are many. Some are Western educated individuals – politicians and technocrats – while others are religious scholars. Still yet, there are feudalists who are uncompromising believers in the rigidity of culture.
There are also the liberals who are not actually bothered by the traditions, neither the religious nor the cultural inhibitions. Some of these liberals swing for and against traditions depending on how their interests are served. Thus the issue of cultural traditions in such an atmosphere can be contentious. While many are more interested in these traditions mainly to perpetuate selfish interests, others have romanticized them as the basis to define their identity and destiny, regardless of the efficacy and relevance of the tradition.
In light of the above, one can understand why conversations on cultural traditions are touchy. Female circumcision (FC), or the more controversial term Female Genital Mutilation, is one of those longstanding traditions of some ethnic groups in the Gambia that is highly debatable especially since it became a target for women’s rights organizations who describe it as a harmful traditional practice. Now that the president of the republic, President Yahya Jammeh, has made a verbal declaration to ban the practice, a discussion of this traditional practice for our collective edification is necessary.
Those who support Female Circumcision claim that it is a deep-rooted tradition, which ensures the purity and chastity of a woman. They claim that it reduces the desire for sex and consequently puts a check on female premarital sex and sexual promiscuity, among others. They also claim that individuals and organizations fighting against Female Circumcision are foreign instigated agents bent on destroying an aspect of some African culture and way of life.
Those who habitually stand against the ban on FC range from religionists to feudalists as well as reactionary politicians and intellectuals who claim that the practice is sanctioned by Islam–thus an obligation for every Muslim woman. These and other arguments are vigorously held by such individuals to the extent that some of them swear on the name of God that doom awaits those who condemn Female Circumcision, those who, they say, defy the ways of Allah. But a cursory look at their arguments shows that there is no iota of fact or religious sanctity in their assertions.
Origins of Female Circumcision
To fully understand their argument and place it exactly where it belongs – in the dustbin of misconceptions and mystification – it is necessary to take a closer look at this harmful practice. Contrary to their belief, Female Circumcision predates Islam and even the “Father” of the prophets – Ibrahim, peace be upon him (pbuh). And it is not a practice that is alien to Africa.
As far as recorded history is concerned Female Circumcision was first known to be practiced by Africans at a time when Arabs and Europeans were only hordes of uncultured barbarians in the wilderness. Scriptural facts – that is Koranic and Biblical accounts – claim that Ibrahim came from the barren sands of the Arabian Desert to Egypt in search of food when he was over 90 years of age. After that, God spoke to him to purify himself in the course of which he eventually got circumcised in a covenant marking the beginning of his prophethood. No such command was given to his wives, though one of them was said to have circumcised herself in a show of sympathy for her husband. This divine story clearly indicates that Ibrahim and the people and culture he came from did not know what circumcision was in the first place, even for males. And the Scriptures do not indicate that God had told him to circumcise his women.
This story shows that our Ancestors in Ancient Egypt were already circumcising their men and, perhaps, their women. And the reasons for that practice have been studied and exposed to the world by erudite and seasoned scholars like Cheikh Anta Diop of Senegal, Oba T’Shaka of America, Basil Davidson of England and Marcel Griaule of France, among others. In all their accounts, they have shown that our Ancestors performed circumcision as a matter of spirituality and scientific achievement.
According to the Egyptian belief system, only God manifests the characteristics or attributes of both man and woman at the same time. So, a human being – who is just a creation of the Almighty God – cannot have the same attributes as the Creator. According to these scholars, the Ancient Egyptians held that there were no absolute positions or domains: nothing was completely good or completely bad. Good was the extreme of Bad and bad was the extreme of good, in the same way that the Day was the extreme of the Night, and vice versa.
In Kemet, our Ancestors believed that man was the extreme of the woman, and the woman the extreme of the man. The manifestation of the woman in man is the nipples – breasts on a man – and the manifestation of the man in a woman is the clitoris – the penis on a woman. The Egyptians reckoned that since only God was androgynous, the man or the woman needed to remain gendered, at all costs. They would cut off the man’s nipples if they would develop into breasts to ensure the man remained a derivative of God. However, this biological development rarely occurred in men.
But in the woman they held that the clitoris had the potential to grow as long and as big as the penis of a man. Ultimately this was unacceptable in Kemetian Cosmogony. From this point on, it is obvious how and why Female Circumcision was born. To make her remain a derivative of the Creator, the clitoris of the woman had to be cut off. Since the Egyptians were equally believers in Ma’at (Balance), they quickly shifted to the scientific and healthy policy of removing the foreskin of the penis in a man as well – circumcision. Some held that this was to make the penis even more pronounced in the man.
Thus according to Cheikh Anta Diop, “only among Blacks does circumcision find an interpretation integrated in a general explanation of the universe, in other words, a cosmogony.” According to the Frenchman Griaule, “circumcision must be accompanied by excision. These two operations remove something female from the male and something male from the female.” He continues that, “such an operation is intended to fortify the dominant character of a single sex in a given human being.”
C. A. Diop, speaking about the Dogon Community, which lives in present-day Mali, adds that, “according to the Dogon Cosmogony, a newborn baby is to a certain extent androgynous, like a god.” This last point conforms to the belief system of many in Africa and in the Gambia today, for all ethnic groups here believe that a newborn baby is more or less an angel! This is the tradition behind Female Circumcision that has remained with several African cultures up to the present moment.
Female circumcision at the time of the Holy Prophet
The history of The Holy Prophet Muhammad, peace and the blessings of Allah be upon him, in Islamic history has shown that he has never uttered any statement in his entire life ordering the circumcision of women. The one and only incident mentioned was when the Holy Prophet was quoted in an unauthentic Hadith from a female circumciser, Ummu Attia of Medina, who said the prophet told her not to cut too much of the clitoris but to leave some for better appearance and satisfaction for the husband. Further, there is also another Hadith involving this woman which is said to be attributed to the Holy Project in which he was quoted as saying that circumcision is a Sunna, and a sign of respect for women. This Hadith too is found to be false. All eminent scholars on the Hadith have concluded that all references to female circumcision attributed to the Holy Prophet were poor in authenticity.
Female Circumcision hence is more widespread in African societies than in any other society in the world, be they Christians, such as the Orthodox Ethiopians, or Muslims in the Gambia. There is no documentation that can show that circumcision was sanctioned by Islam. Nor is there a debate about these origins of the practice in Africa. In fact history has documented that the people who largely do not practice any form of circumcision, either male or female, even in the past, are Caucasian or Aryan cultures including the Arabs, Indians and Chinese. Records have it that female circumcision began in Ancient Egypt more than 1000 years before Christ under the reign of Pharaoh Ramses.
In Islam, the Koran and the Hadith are resource materials that can always provide guidance when in doubt about any aspect of human life in any place, circumstance and time. Individuals can consult these texts to determine if Female Circumcision is anywhere stated in Islamic injunction.
For that matter, a fundamental question could be asked as to whether in fact the Holy Prophet’s wives, peace and blessings be upon them, were circumcised or not, and whether he also circumcised his own daughters. The answer to this simple question would have solved all this controversy and saved the lives of millions of African and Arab women Muslims. But again, it is clear that such a question could generate the wrath of religionists who would simply claim the question to be blasphemous and disrespectful.
I have asked many clerics without receiving any conclusive answers! There is immense misconception about Islam today, simply because of an ignorance that mystifies so-called men of God. Interestingly, the very imams who promote Female Circumcision in the Gambia are yet to give a specific chapter or verse in the Koran or the Hadith to support the claim that this practice is Islamic. Rather, they have dishonestly and cleverly played with vague generalities intended to confuse the minds of the people.
To defend their fragile positions, religionists and dogmatists embark on a campaign of mystification of not only the Faith but of knowledge itself. They give the impression that they possess a divine wisdom and that the Koran is such a book that not everyone can understand even though it is written in human languages! For such men of Islam, the readings of the Alcoran is ‘not easy’ and not for everyone! And there are those who go to the ludicrous height of creating the impression that they were even present at the time of the Holy Prophet and his Companions.
According to Dr. Mohamed Selim Al-Awa, the General Secretary of the International Federation of Islamic Scholars, ‘Female Circumcision in the Context of Islam’ raised the question whether Female Circumcision is a precept of Islam. In response he noted that Islamic Sharia is derived from the following authentic sources: the Holy Quran, the Sunna (traditions), Qiyas (use of analogical arguments) and Ijma’ (juridical consensus), which are the four fundamental principles of Islamic jurisprudence. He continued that in order to determine where Islamic Sharia stands as far as Female Circumcision is concerned we have to search in the Holy Quran, then the Sunna, then Ijma’ and finally Qiyas.
Dr. Mohamed Selim Al-Awa concluded with the following: (1) The Holy Quran is void of any reference to Female Circumcision, there is no Ijma’ or consensus on a specific legal ruling, and there is no Qiyas or analogy that can be accepted; (2) As for the Sunna, there is doubt as to the authenticity of some of the Hadith attributed to the Prophet (pbuh) in this concern. The truth is there is no proof of the authenticity of these narratives that can be used as the bases for a legal ruling on such a life-threatening issue; (3) Scholars cannot base their argument on narratives that cannot be traced to a credible source since a valid argument can only be based on authenticity.
I interviewed an important Imam from Mecca who consecrated the mosque at State House during the transition period and asked about Female Circumcision. His response was that female circumcision does not hold any position in Islam: “A circumcised woman and an uncircumcised woman are equal in the eyes of God.” What distinguishes them is their piety. In countries with a large majority of Muslims such as Senegal and Ghana, the practice of Female Circumcision has been banned. I do not think Gambians can claim to know Islam and the Koran more than the Senegalese or the Ghanaians, or this important Imam from Mecca!
The Illogicality of Female Circumcision
Another aspect of the religionists/feudalists’ argument that exposes their poor understanding of their societies and the impact of our traditions is that they feel our cultural practices and traditions are absolute and sacrosanct. But change is the only permanent reality; and all other phenomena, matter and spirit respect this law of nature. Everything withers away except change, for the act of withering away itself manifests an act of change.
Now if we consider the point that Female Circumcision reduces the desire for sex in a woman and consequently reduces or prevents premarital sex, prostitution and promiscuity, then sadly we see a totally different situation in the Gambia where a large majority of women are circumcised. The overwhelming number of teenagers getting pregnant, the high rate of premarital sex, general casual sex and prostitution in the Gambia clearly shows that Female Circumcision is ineffective.
Otherwise, why didn’t God keep these women, with all due respect to women, clean and pure? Or do we have to look at other reasons such as the unfavorable economic conditions and foreign cultural influences in our society today? Yes, that is part of the problem. The argument for Female Circumcision is so weak that it cannot withstand the tide. It is more of a harm and liability than good. Plus, have we considered that sex cannot happen without the cooperation and participation of men?
Female Circumcision smacks of oppression and unfairness against women more than anything else. That is not meant to condemn our Ancestors for initiating the practice–for objective intellectualism dictates that when we analyze cultures and people, we judge according to their time, place and circumstances, and not according to our current yardsticks. Otherwise we become chauvinists, tribalists and racists. But then if a traditional practice emanating from the throes of the past is defended so vigorously today when in the open its practice blatantly and mercilessly harms a people whose only relevance to it is they are simply descendants of the initiators of that practice, then I think it is just sensible that they roll back that practice and bury it for good.
A society that refuses to think correctly and re-examine its cultural practices, contemporary and ancient, to ascertain their efficacy, relevance and maintenance, is a society heading for doom. If people find Female Circumcision hard to abandon because it is our tradition, then I ask: Is drinking alcohol not a fundamental practice of our ancestors or the marrying of numerous wives? Yet we have abandoned these practices in favour of better ones.
If we claim that Female Circumcision is sanctioned by Islam then why is it not a popular practice in Saudi Arabia, Kuwait and other Arab emirates which claim to be one hundred percent Muslim and are ruled by Shari’ah? Furthermore, one will find that in other African communities where non-Muslim populations are high, Female Circumcision is still a major practice showing that, in fact, it is not about Islam, rather it is purely an outdated cultural practice. For example, in the Gambia one will find that within Mandinka or Jola communities, regardless of their religion, the practice of Female Circumcision is present.
In Islam, it is stated that if a doctor advises a believer not to keep fast in the interest of her health, she is therefore exempted from keeping fast. And again if a medical expert or doctor advises a believer that she should not travel to Mecca to perform the Hajj for reasons of health, or for adverse financial implications, she is supposed to heed that advice. In fact if going to Mecca will affect her family at home, the best option then is to stay home.
Keeping fast or performing the Hajj are two of the five fundamental pillars of Islam, but in the above scenarios, despite their dedication to the Faith, believers have leeway to avoid observing them, even temporarily. The same discretion arises with regards to Female Circumcision, which is not a fundamental pillar of Islam, and yet still some people maintain and insist that Muslims should practice it. Why? And it becomes even more absurd in the face of the health implications of the practice, in that doctors have abundantly indicated the circumcision can cost not only the life of a mother and child but also can deny a woman the very essence of womanhood.
Way forward
We must recognize the fact that Female Circumcision is a mechanism employed only to control and exploit women. This makes Female Circumcision a fundamental human rights issue because it hurts the very dignity and life of women and girls in our society. The practice provides no use in any form to a girl other than to tame her to be subservient and to limit her potential in her society.
The clitoris is not filthy or sick. It has clear and direct usefulness for the woman all throughout her life, and there is absolutely no need to remove it. Female Circumcision has been shrouded in mystery since time immemorial simply because men, who dominate society, found it a useful mechanism to put women under their control. Female Circumcision is, therefore, a well-calculated and designed socio-economic and political tool against women and female empowerment. The practice is completely not Islamic as it predates Islam by far.
People should now bury for good that mentality that only those who can quote the Koran and, indeed, any other material are the owners of knowledge. Knowledge is acquired, just like mangoes, but only if you are ready to seek it. And no one can claim to have a monopoly of it. The Koran is written in the Arabic language, the same language they teach in the schools of Arab countries. To know that language, to be able to speak and write it, is one thing; but to have a knowledge in the science of religion and spirituality, otherwise called theology, is another thing altogether.
People should also abandon that attitude of getting their information from secondary sources or hearsay; rather, people should endeavour to get their information from primary sources. In that way no one can be fooled, manipulated or misled. Information is power, and he who controls more information than you, and especially who feeds you the information that is essential for your life, will eventually own and control you.
The challenge to each and every one of us is to seek knowledge, and as the Koran says: “seek knowledge from the day you are born until the day you go to your grave.” And this point has been buttressed by the Holy Prophet Muhammad (pbuh), saying: “Seek knowledge even if you have to go to China to get it.” As a matter of fact, the first injunction the Holy Prophet ever received was “learn” from the Angel Gabriel. Unless people arm themselves with information and knowledge, their lives will continue to be at the mercy of so-called ‘giants’ of knowledge–just dwarfs living misery.
This is a forceful piece tracing Circumcision back to our ancient roots in Kemet. What’s more, showing that this practice is deeply rooted in African Religio-Cultural practices stemming from that period. The explanations are understandable of what our Ancestors knew about the world. They knew a lot, but we have learned a lot. The case cannot be made hence that the Clitoris might actually develop into an elongated organ (penis). We’ve had some seven thousand years to understand this phenomenon. There are very very few exceptions. So, the logical conclusion is instructive, why keep Circumcising Women when we know with certainty that the Clitoris stays a clitoris! In the same way we know that the man’s breast does not develop in BREASTS! The Kemetian Cosmogony is our duty to modify as the offsprings of that Brilliant, but not perfect, Civilization, so that perhaps we can attain a more Perfect Civilization. This, I feel, is a logical argument with an obvious conclusion. There is nothing more to add. Wonderful.
This cultural critique is absolutely necessary. This is a piece every African intellectual should read. Every traditional leader must be compelled to engage in this sort of discussion. It is the absence of logical thinking – something our Kemetian ancestors worked so hard to propound – that is killing the integrity of our cultural norms and practices. If our traditional leaders do not give in to reason, a significant part of African culture will die out without remembrance and reverence.
Creatively worded, capturing logics to appeal to common sense for absolute transformation of negative concept of our past culture failing to be relevance to modern practice. Bravo.
I have always thought that this was an Islamic Ideology to oppress women. I had no idea our Ancestors did this for reasons of Cosmogony. Even they chilled out of the idea after sometime and it remained only one of Theological Debate. I am glad for this essay. It is fact based and I love the sincerity. We too must learn to face our demons, or soon enough we will be swallowed by it’s our cultural shortcomings as well. But the message is in the right place, we should all do what we can to stop this practice. Even rewrite the Cosmogony to reflect our understandings of the world in the 21st century.
I love this quote from a friend: “The argument has been won that the benefits of male circumcision outweigh the social justice warriors’ argument against it. Female circumcision is abuse meant strictly to eliminate a woman’s ability to climax. It has exactly no place in this debate yet it’s constantly compared as if the two are even remotely similar. They are not. Yet another pity party for the man undermining the heinous atrocities against women in this millennium. Perhaps, Labiaplasty is the female equivalent and it’s not a big deal.”
Female Circumcision is a celebration for girls who will soon become women in the eyes of their people: the Kuria in southern Kenya. It’s a rite of passage rooted in at least two thousand years of tradition. Some call it “circumcision”, others: female genital mutilation, or FGM. Whatever the name the reality is the same. Later that day, girls under the age of sixteen will have their clitorises cut out. Every day, six thousand girls, many of them in sub-Saharan Africa, will endure procedures like this one. There is no place for such a tradition in African culture any longer. There is absolutely no reason for it. This is injustice, this is penurious, this is suffering, for absolutely nothing and achieves nothing. Let us stop it.
Circumcision – of females – is nothing but barbaric child mutilation and anybody who attempts to justify it needs to be castrated and locked up. Any woman who tries to justify it should be sterilized and never allowed to have contact with children. It’s just plain savage. Period. It’s not “Religious freedom” or a “right” to mutilate a child regardless of their gender–it’s abuse and torture, period.

There is a lot of controversy on the issue of Female Circumcision or Female Genital Mutilation (FGM). It is prohibited by law in most Westen Countries since it is a horrendous and cruel procedure that women are forced so suffer in many countries, particularly in North East Africa. It has a long tradition that goes back way before the time of Islam. It is practiced in varying degrees (see the links in this section). In Egypt the practice dates back even to the the time of the Pharaohs and it is sadly performed by people of different religious backgrounds. In discussions about this topic, Muslims usually insist that this practice is a cultural issue, and it is not religiously mandated by Islam.

However what the Arabic actually says is:
Circumcision is obligatory (for every male and female)
by cutting off the piece of skin on the glans of the penis of the male,
but circumcision of the female is by cutting out the clitoris

The Arabic word bazr does not mean “prepuce of the clitoris”, it means the clitoris itself (cf. the entry in the Arabic-English Dictionary). The deceptive translation by Nuh Hah Mim Keller, made for Western consumption, obscures the Shafi’i law, given by ‘Umdat al-Salik, that circumcision of girls by excision of the clitoris is mandatory. This particular form of female circumcision is widely practiced in Egypt, where the Shafi’i school of Sunni law is followed.
Christina, Thanks for the the information. But unless one can show in black and white a chapter or verse in the Qur’an or a Hadith authenticated by the leading scholars or a ruling in a Sharia court or opinions of the learned that female circumcision is obligatory, I think any other account can just be treated as hearsay. As I tried to argue, there exists no such chapter or verse and the few Hadith attributed to the Holy Prophet of Islam (pbuh) have been found to be poor in authenticity. These are that a circumciser should not cut too much for the beauty of the woman and for the satisfaction of the husband, and that circumcision is an honour for women. These are found to be unauthentic. But I have also argued that one can seek to know if the Holy Prophet (pbuh) did circumcise her daughters as a definitive answer to this question. As a Muslim this is one story I have never heard even slightly mentioned in all my study of Islam in the Gambia. Every aspect of the life of Holy Prophet (pbuh) is documented and celebrated by Muslims, yet no one ever heard of any event or reference to him circumcising his daughters. From how we cut our nails, to how we should live with our wives and even how to lie down on one’s bed to sleep among others, Muslim try to follow the way the Holy Prophet (pbuh) did these things, yet no one ever mentions whether the man, considered the holiest of all ever circumcised his daughters. Thus for me, female circumcision is not an obligation in any way.

Seems I’m the only guy out there urging in the name of Reason as benefit of circumcision, particularly early, like on the 8th day, not just the common argument of its promoting cleanliness and less disease, but more importantly, that neonate circumcision promotes greater intellectual development by the addition of penile stimulation to the developing mind just as the eyes are learning to see, the ears learning to hear, along with the newly born’s other feelings, tongue, skin, etc.
It may sound strange at first, but isn’t it reasonable that adding more complexity to the neural networking core of the developing mind would result in more complex neural branching outward of that network, and thus a more complex mind, better ability to learn?
Nature’s purpose for the foreskin is arguably to postpone experiencing much penile stimulation until adolescence, so the male would then use what he managed to learn up to that point, and his developed muscles, to successfully chase down whatever female he was attracted to.
Circumcision seems a civilized improvement over animal sexual instincts, and so to use it to promote extra mental development seems the parents’ right.
Fortunately the recent ruling of the German Court in Hamm only requires the child’s participation in deciding upon circumcision when old enough to talk.
Despite being outlawed throughout Africa, FGM still continues, especially among many of the continent’s rural ethnic group. The World Health Organization estimates that about 130 million women and girls worldwide, some as young as nine years of age, undergo some form of female circumcision. Those communities that still engage in FGM despite its illegality view the practice as a way of life, rooted in years of cultural tradition.
THE BUTCHERS OF WOMANHOOD- FGM ( THE COVENANT OF THE FLESH). When God told Abraham to sign the covenant of the flesh, he circumcised all the male children and he was circumcised. The message was direct and in plain language. GENESIS 17: 1-27. The agreement was strategically initiated and the male child grew beholding daily his agreement with God at every call of nature throughout his married life. The covenant of the flesh for a man is with ease to behold with no ill feelings or regrets without medication required afterwards in life. When God told Moses that the Children of Israel shall not circumcise girls, the message was well understood and was given in a spiritual language which bears two warnings, Leviticus19:28-29. The Israelis parents shall not sexually mutilate daughters and fathers we commanded not have carnal knowledge (incest) of daughters making them prostitutes. Fgm prostitution is a prime satanic sacrifice for a woman prohibited by God, of secrecy with miseries and constrains of disgrace to behold accompanied by many cases of traumatic child delivery requiring medication. Fgm sin of crime of honor humiliation for womanhood persists for many girls globally. There is no open fold of a foreskin in a sexual organ of a woman to cut round that hides dirty stuffs that stinks. There are no undue growths that warrant cutting and scrapping in her sexual organ. There is no part of her sexual organ that rots as she grows old from childhood. Those who justify fgm benefits in any form are mare agents of satan in sheep skin. There are blunt lies of those women anointed by satan to propagate fgm when they claim women that are not cut stinks.
