Navigating the maze that is online video streaming can be a arduous task in itself.

Below are 4 films and 1 television series that are worth a watch–for their creativity, controversy, and/or contemporary relevance.

1. Newlyweeds (2013) (pictured above)

As the legalization of marijuana becomes a reality in some states and a serious issue of contention in others, more features might drift from the pure stoner comedy genre to the kind of dramedy we see in Newlyweeds. First-time director Shaka King allows marijuana to take center stage in this film about a young pot-smoking couple in Brooklyn. Trailer.

  1. ‘Orange Is The New Black’ is make believe falsely painting an extremely diverse (women’s) prison population. We know that ain’t true. If white women went to prison in proportion to the number of black women who go to prison, then maybe this whole idiotic Neanderthal war on drugs would come to a close. Before then… daimn what an attempt to ameliorate our feelings about the atrocities being committed against black women too. This whole picture of Orange Is The New Black is a way to sway constructive debate away from what really is the issue – white men – and their appetite for so much ‘things’ that they have destroyed every group of people in the last 500 years. When will this nonsense end? When will the suffering stop? When are we going to start telling the truth?

  2. Man, I hope that black boys and men can also come together to form a reading club called ‘Undefeated’. Man that will be a day!

  3. I loved big words. Those two can hold up a whole film along the lines of Blue Valentine, Like Crazy, and such. I like to see them on the screen sometime.
